Fall Block Party

Fall Block Party

You typically only think of a block party during the warmer months of Summer. But you know how I love experimentations… how about a block party in the chilly months of Fall and Winter?

This Fall Block Party has to feature something warming that will get you full. Of course it screams for chili, and I have found the best, easiest, tastiest chili recipe you’ll ever make. My friend Jane Henry’s developed this recipe and I just can’t tell you enough how perfect it is. Plus, I’m not usually one for taking the short-cut when it comes to cooking but I’ll do it for chili that tastes this good. The recipe is so easy you’ll want to double it so you can freeze some. Or if you don’t have it frozen, it’s easy enough that you could make it on a weeknight: throw the ingredients in a pot, simmer and presto!

Ann Hollowell makes Stuffed Dogs on The Cooking LadySo what else would go with chili but burgers and hot dogs. But here’s the thing, grilled burgers and dogs are for the Summer. In the fall you’ve got to try something a little different, so I like to do a Stuffed Hot Dog under the broiler and a Juicy Lucy Slider in the grill pan. If you’ve never had a Juicy Lucy, you’re in for a treat. It’s a burger with a piece of cheese in the middle, and in the slider form it’s fantastic.

I wanted a couple other toppings for our burgers and sliders so I also made my Tangy, Creamy Cole Slaw and Horseradish Sauce (for red meat). They’re both easy and both delicious.

So get your neighbors together and enjoy a fall block party.

In Jane’s Chili will it make a difference if I use chili beans and chili powder rather than “hot” beans and powder?

      Hi Philip,
If you don’t want the heat, so to speak, you can go with regular beans and chili powder, absolutely! But please be assured, Jane Henry’s Chili isn’t really HOT. It’s very savory, with a mild kick, not something that would upset the digestion. You will love the onion taste with the very beefy overtones, I just think it’s amazing.

My sweet friend has given me a fabulous recipe to share with the world, and it just has so much flavor cooked in such a short time. As another dear friend’s mother once told me, Ann, if you’re in the kitchen and cooking, and find you don’t have the exact ingredient, improvise, substitute, make it work. It’s your effort as a cook that makes your dish a success for your family and friends. I find they always appreciate your efforts. ENJOY!
